Turbine lubrication oil a fire risk

Lubrication oil for turbines poses a particular problem, as the running temperature of the turbine can often exceed the ignition temperature of the oil. Other areas of high risk include conveyors, where objects in the incoming material, such as stones and metal pieces, can obstruct the flow and cause temperature rise. Elevated temperature rise can also be caused by friction due to material buildup.

Thousands of liters of oil are used to lubricate the bearings of a large steam turbine generator. If an oil leakage and subsequent fire occurs, for instance due to vibrations, operator error or electrical failure, the consequences for the plant can be catastrophic.

Fires cause high costs and long downtime

According to research by FM Global, inadequate fire protection was a major contributing factor in 17 large turbine building fires it researched. The property damage, not counting lost production, was more than 400 million dollars. The average property loss was 26 million dollars. The turbines were out of action for between 10 days and 48 weeks. The lost generating capacity was more than 20 million MWh.
